“I love it here, but I look at the senior leadership roles and think it’s not worth the stress…I’m not up for playing politics or dealing with egos anymore…leadership here means being big and loud and fake…there’s not much space left in the room when it’s all been taken up.”
There is a lot of talk at the moment about why many senior people are quitting corporations. I would like to suggest a factor that has been around a while. It stems from the sadness of realising, that success in corporate life is often a case of dulling your emotions and not showing all your reactions.
Power, persuasion, politics, partisanship win instead.
We lose our Challengers. People who have an instinct for the complex, some scepticism and open-mindedness. Those that are striving for the truth behind the slogans. They lose sight of the connection and vulnerability that organisations need. They lose hope.
And then they are gone.
